I did not originally set out to write a novel. In the years around 2003-2004, as I awoke to the
rising chaos and corruption in American politics during the first George W. Bush administration,
and pondered our growing understanding of climate change and resource depletion, I began to
wonder with growing alarm about the long-term effects of bad governance, corruption, willful
ignorance of science in public policy and education, and the economic stripping of the middle
class. Having spent a sizeable portion of my life living outside the United States, where I
witnessed cases of profound political-institutional change, I knew that things would not
necessarily always stay the same in the USA – that there would have to be consequences of
